See the Notre Dame Marching Band on Friday, November 11

Notre Dame is traveling to Maryland to take on the Terps on Saturday, November 12, at FedEx Field. Their redound marching band, Band of the Fighting Irish, is making the trek as well and they'll be practicing at Bishop McNamara High School's Tyoka Jackson Field on Friday, November 11th from 10:15 AM to 11:45 AM. This is an open, full dress rehearsal and it is free and open to the public!

This is a great opportunity for Notre Dame fans, musicians or burgeoning musicians to see one of the best college marching bands in the nation* perform up close and personal!

Jump Off! this weekend

Regular readers of this blog won't be surprised to know that my two absolute most favorite places for children in Prince George's County are Watkins Park and the National Children's Museum Launch Zone.

So can you imagine my excitement that the Launch Zone is hosting an event at Watkins Park?! It doesn't get any better than that, my friends!

Here is the scoop!

The National Children's Museum will present the fourth annual Jump Off! at Watkins Regional Park on October 22, from noon until 4pm. This event is designed to inspire children to be physically active while having fun.

The afternoon will feature free, outdoor exhibition performances by nationally renowned Double Dutch jump rope teams along with numerous family friendly activities. Highlights include:

·         Stellar performances and workshops by Jump Off! veterans the Greenbelt S.I.T.Y. (Sensational, Inspiring, Talented, Youthful) Stars, Kangaroo Kids, and Youth Sports Jump Rope FX;
·         Special guest appearances by The Washington Mystics representatives, with an inflatable basketball challenge, and the WPGC 95.5 street team (1-2 p.m.) who will provide music and live entertainment, as well as giveaways and promos;
·         Frisbee decorating (while supplies last) and parachute play with NCM staff.

In addition, the Museum is welcoming six community exhibitors to Jump Off! Community exhibitors include:

The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission, bringing coloring books and handouts;
RJ Smiles Inc., providing arts and crafts activities;
Echoes of Nature, with animal artifacts and pelts, and a finger puppet craft;
Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, giving away pens, pencils, and bookmarks;
X-Treme Teens, in their Tahoe truck with handouts and interactive fun;
M.O.M.I.E.’s TLC, hosting hands-on activities.

This year, Jump Off! turns into a festival with food vendors, hula-hooping, face painting, and all-day music, in addition to the community exhibitors and performances on the main stage. Also, don’t miss out on Watkins Regional Park’s Fall into Fun event from 1 to 4 p.m! Take a train ride around the park as you enjoy the fall foliage, or get into the seasonal spirit with a hayride and a trip to the Nature Center for fall-themed arts and crafts.

This Saturday, September 24, is the annual Smithsonian magazine museum day! Of course we all know that the Smithsonian museums are free every day of the year, but on this particular day, many other museums are also offering free admission. You simply have to request a free ticket (limit 2 per household) here and then use that ticket on Saturday.

It's the 15th Annual Port Towns Day this Saturday, September 17, from noon until 8pm at Bladensburg Waterfront Park!

We love the Bladensburg Waterfront Park and Port Towns Day is always a lot of fun. This year there are TONS of great activities throughout the day.

There will be great music, Anacostia boat rides very 30 minutes, crafts, games, face painting and even a free mobile roller skate van -- with youth and adult sizes!

The Big Build on Saturday, September 17

We love the free family events at the National Building Museum! Usually they are totally packed, but they are so full of awesomeness that it is definitely worth it.

The Big Build: A Hands-on Family Festival of Tools, Trucks and Building Arts sounds amazing!

It will take place THIS Saturday, September 17 from 10am until 4:30pm at the National Building Museum.

Activities for visitors of all ages: drywall finishing, bricklaying, roof thatching, woodworking, surveying, nail driving, and more.

Young architects and builders let their imaginations soar as they design and construct miniature houses of sticks.

Talk with plumbers, roofers, architects, landscape designers, conservationists, and other experts in many fields to learn about both traditional and new building techniques and materials.

Make a kite for the windy days ahead!

So in case you haven't heard, we're expecting a few gusts of wind this weekend.

Oh, you've heard? Yeah, her name is Irene.

I'm obviously not recommending you take your kid on a kite flying adventure during the middle of a hurricane, but maybe you can take advantage of some lingering wind next week to take your new kite out for a spin.

Oh, you don't have a new kite? Well, then, my friend, head on over to the College Park Aviation Museum on Saturday at 1pm to build and decorate your own kite!

The workshop is $8 per participant but that also includes museum admission.

Ahhhh...SHARKS!

One of Lucas's favorite beach activities is hunting for shark teeth. And while I'm sad to say that due to an extremely tight budget we aren't going to the beach this year, he can still hunt for shark teeth thanks to the National Children's Museum Launch Zone!

Monday, August 8, kicks off their "Ahhh...SHARKS!" program where they will celebrate all things shark! Kids can hunt for shark teeth on a "beach," see and touch real shark jaws and other artifacts and make a craft.

The FREE event (no registration required!) takes place August 8, 9 and 10 from 11am-4pm and Saturday, August 13, from 11am-6pm.

Summer Outdoor Movies at the College Park Aviation Museum

The College Park Aviation Museum is hosting free (with museum admission) summer outdoor movies this year. How fun!

They kick-off this Friday, July 29 at 9pm with Despicable Me. The museum doors re-open at 7pm when there will be fun, hands-on activities, sno cones and popcorn. Then, the movie begins promptly at 9pm (when, hopefully, it will be a tad bit cooler!).

The series continues on August 19 with How to Train Your Dragon.

Museum admission is (as usual) $4 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for kids and free for those under 2.

Get Up & Go at the National Children's Museum

It seems like my major focus of these dog days of summer is wearing my boys out! They are both high energy and if I don't keep them active then they'll keep themselves active by (literally!) jumping on the furniture and up the walls!

I can't wait to take them to Get Up & Go at the National Children's Museum Launch Zone. This free event (and no registration required--woohoo!) will feature all kinds of activities to keep your kids moving--from spoon and "egg" (curious to find out why they have that in quotes!) relays to dancing, Simon Says and jumping jack contests throughout the day. Really, is there anything cuter than a group of kids doing jumping jacks?

There will also be plenty of tips on healthy living.

Get Up & Go will take place July 25, 27 and 27, and August 1, 3 and 5 from 11am-4pm and on July 30 and August 6 from 11am-6pm.

Operation Firefly

Some of my fondest childhood memories include catching fireflies in the evenings. Now that Lucas's summer bed time is a little later, observing and catching fireflies has become an almost-nightly ritual for him, too. Although my little lover-of-creatues-great-and-small was horrified to learn that when I was a little girl, I often pulled off the glowing part to make myself a diamond ring!

I imagine that the scientists behind Operation Firefly would be horrified as well. They are studying an important question: Are fireflies disappearing?

And they need your kids to become citizen scientists to help find the answer!

Yeah, and it's probably a good idea, um, not to mention the, er, "diamond" ring idea to your kids. And let's not discuss the idea of "diamond" earrings either!

Backyard Campout at the National Children's Museum

Lucas and Abel, along with a friend, enjoyed their first back-yard campout last week and loved it. I expect lots more camping (both of the backyard and actual forest variety!) in our future.

I can't wait to take Lucas and Nathaniel to the National Children's Museum Launch Zone's latest hands-on experience for kids: Backyard Campout! They've teamed up with REI to help kids learn all about camping--from checking out camping equipment, crawling into and through tents to exploring deer and bear tracks thanks to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

This FREE event takes place July 11, 13, 15, 18, 20 and 22 from 11am-4pm and on July 16 and 23 from 11am-6pm.

No registration is necessary.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens - Another great reason to visit!

Thanks to Our-Kids and Hiking Along for giving us another great reason to visit the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens this summer: The River Trail!

Outside of the National Arboretum, the Aquatic Gardens are definitely the least-known gem of Northeast DC! I highly recommend a visit!

Free Concerts at Strathmore

Longtime readers know that I love, love, love the plethora of free outdoor summer concerts in the DC-area. Last summer (or was it the year before?) I found a free outdoor concert for my readers nearly every. single. night. all. summer. long.

Can I do it again this year? So far, you know about Sunday night concerts and Thursday night concerts. Now I'm excited to tell you about free Wednesday night concerts!

Yes, these are outside of Prince George's County, but not too far, and at such a lovely venue it will be worth the beltway. (Bonus if you already work in MoCo, head over straight from work and completely miss rush hour traffic to get home!)

It's the Strathmore Free Summer Outdoor Concert Series! And it takes place every Wednesday evening through August 24.

Concerts start at 7pm and take place in front of the Gudelsky Concert Gazebo, in front of the mansion (bring your blankets and lawn chairs!). But here's the totally cool part--roving street performers and special (surprise!) guests will be there starting at 5:30pm to entertain you! Here's what the Strathmore folks say, "Jesters Nicolo Whimsey and Michael Rosman will delight visitors with plate spinning, uncicles, juggling and accordion, while Elena Day, Sabrina Mandell and Mark Jaster engage audience with their mimery and interactive merriment. Mischevious shrubbery from Ambush Theater will sneak, snoop and surprise unsuspecting audience members at the free outdoor concerts."

How fun is that? Even better, they'll have very, very yummy-sounding food and drink (regular 'ole American burgers, etc. plus international fare inspired by the performers!) plus soda, water, beer and wine (date night anyone?!) for sale.

So, here's my recommendation: leave early, arrive by 5:30pm and purchase dinner (or pre-pack it yourself!) and beat the traffic (well, try to anyway!) and crowds to enjoy the pre-show and concert. Lovely!

Backyard Theater for Children at Strathmore

Last Summer, courtesy of Strathmore, we attended the very last Backyard Theater for Children performance of the season. It was wonderful! Our only regret is that we didn't discover this gem of a series until it was over.

That's why I'm thrilled to know that it's back again this year!

And better than ever, in my opinion, as this year the series has an international focus. Throughout July you and your family can travel around the world without leaving the backyard of the Strathmore! Abel and I think it is so important to expose our kids to as much culture as possible and we love to do it like this, in ways that they'll really enjoy.

The venue (a large tent over grass) and low ticket price (only $8! and free for 2 and under) make for a casual morning. I can guarantee your rambunctious toddler, preschooler or elementary-aged child won't be the only one clapping or dancing or cheering (or all of the above!) throughout the show. In fact, for the first performance, Sin Miedo, you're even encouraged to bring your own maracas. But I must say that after listening to their YouTube clip, I'm pretty sure my Latin husband is going to have me up and dancing during this show!

We can't wait to pack up our blanket and head back over to the Strathmore's backyard for a show this year. Maybe we'll see you there!

The grandest day of the year in Cheverly is Cheverly Day and it's coming up this Saturday, May 14. The wonderful hamlet of Cheverly turns 80 this year and big celebrations are in store.

Stake our your spot on Cheverly Avenue between Kilmer and Forest to see the parade which begins at 10am. Although, quite frankly, it seems everyone in town is in at least one participating group so I don't know who will actually be on hand to view it!

Then, head over to Town Park for a great line-up of musicians and performers on the Main Stage, games at the Midway, tables hosted by town organizations, food vendors, the infamous St. Ambrose Beer Garden, the East v West Softball game (East side rules!), and much, much more.

Make sure to head back to Town Park or another good viewing area (the parking lot of the Methodist Church is good for kiddos who don't like the noise) for the fireworks at 9:15. It's the best show in the area--a trial run for the 4th of July show on the National Mall--you don't want to miss it.

Cheverly Truck Touch Thunders into Town on Saturday, May 7

There is one -- and only one -- MUST DO event this weekend: The 14th Annual Cheverly Truck Touch! Here are all the details!

On Saturday, May 7, at the 14th Annual Cheverly Truck Touch, children can sit in the driver's seat of a cement truck, honk the horn of a dump truck, run around inside the trailer of an 18 wheeler, check out a race car, stand on the back of a garbage truck, get up close and personal with a bucket truck, turn on the siren of a police car, put on a fire hat and "drive" a fire truck, and SO MUCH MORE! More than 20 vehicles will be at the Cheverly Truck Touch this year and children can get inside and hands on with every single one of them!

There will also be a small ride-on train, games geared just for little ones, face painting, and yummy hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, baked goods, balloons and adorable t-shirts for sale.

On Saturday, April 30, the National Children's Museum Launch Zone will celebrate its 2nd Birthday and they're inviting you to the party! The fun begins at 11am and lasts until 4pm.

South Mountain Creamery Spring Festival on Saturday, April 30

We've been getting all our eggs, milk, meat and other farm-fresh goodies from South Mountain Creamery in Middleton, MD for more than four years and just adore SMC! Every Thursday morning the cooler on our stoop is filled to the brim with glass bottles of milk, eggs and meat. It is delicious!

If you, too, enjoy deliveries from South Mountain Creamery (or, even if you don't), I highly recommend a trip to the SMC Spring Festival on Saturday, April 30. It's a great way to help your kids understand where their food comes from. In our case, those very cows will have provided the milk they drank that very morning. (And one of the chickens may just be their dinner next week, ahem!)

Admission is free (though there are costs for other things such as yummy food!) to enjoy music, kids' games, hay rides, calf feedings and tours.

Washington Nationals: $1 Kids' Tickets and FREE Clinics

Starting with their first season at RFK, we loved sharing Nationals' season tickets with a group of friends. But, after the kids came along, it was hard to justify the price of a seat for kids who had little or no interest in sitting through an entire game. I'm so excited about the Washington Nationals $1 kids' tickets this year!

Starting with this Saturday's 1:05pm game v. the Brewers and for three additional games throughout the season, you can purchase up to four kids' tickets for just $1 each with the purchase of one full-price ticket. You can purchase them on-line in advance or at the Box Office the day of the game. Full list of games and additional info can be found here.

So, take your kids to a game for $1, then on Saturday, April 23, from 9am-noon, take your aspiring Ryan Zimmerman to the first Washington Nationals and M-NCPPC baseball clinic of the season at the Riverdale Park field in Riverdale, MD. It's FREE!

March Through Time this Weekend

The 19th annual multi-period living history encampment in Prince George's County, Marching Through Time, takes place this Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17 on the grounds of the Marietta House Museum. We stumbled on this event last year and really enjoyed it!

Originally from Pennsylvania (and near Gettysburg), I'm used to seeing Civil War reenactors, but I didn't realize that there are reenactors from pretty much every war out there! Last year at Marching Through Time, we saw soldiers from the Roman Legion, the Irish Republican Army, the Revolutionary War, WWI, WWII and many others! Lucas also loved the long bow and cannon demonstrations.

The entire event is free (even parking--go to the lot at the Glen Dale Community Center and take the free shuttle, it's much easier than trying to park along the busy road) but there are several vendors selling food and other wares. It would be the perfect place to find princess or knight gear for your little dress up artist.

Easter is right around the corner and the area's many Easter events are starting! Two fun events are happening this weekend, the Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex and Magic Eggsravaganza, both on Saturday, April 16.

Admission is $3 per person at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex Annual Easter Egg Hunt, which takes place from 12:30-3pm. Bring your own basket to hunt for eggs then enjoy arts and crafts, games and more. The Easter Bunny is available for photos (nominal charge).

Cherry Blossom Parade and Sakura Matsura Japanese Street Festival

The blooms are beginning to turn to leaves but the Cherry Blossom Festival continues this weekend with the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade and the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival, both on Saturday, April 9.

The parade takes place from 10am-noon along Constitution Avenue from 7th to 17th streets. Seating is free along the parade route, but plan to arrive early as there are sure to be big crowds. This year's event will include grand floats, marching bands, performers and giant helium balloons.

Sakura Matsuri, the annual Japanese street festival, is making two changes this year. First, they are charging admission: $5 per person ages 13 and up. Second, their theme is "Stand with Japan" this year and part of the proceeds will benefit Japanese recovery efforts. In addition, numerous vendors will be making donations and volunteers will be collecting donations for the Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Fund. The Bezos Family Foundation will be making a $2 donation for every paper crane made at the children's corner.

The festival features more than 20 hours of live performances, art and cultural demonstrations, food and a wonderful Children's Corner and stretches more than six city blocks, from 9th to 14th Streets, NW on Pennsylvania Avenue. (That's approximately from the FBI building to just before the White House.)

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the most exciting times be in Washington, DC. Tourists by the thousands flock to the city to see the beautiful blossoms, sometimes causing natives (or transplants!) to stay away. Sure, the Tidal Basin is PACKED, but there is so much more to the National Cherry Blossom Festival than a shoulder to shoulder stroll under Jefferson's watch.

Dress as Kings and Queens to Celebrate Purim at the National Children's Museum Launch Zone

I am sorry to admit that I don't know much about the Jewish holiday of Purim but I did write a paper (an exegesis for any nerds out there!) on a passage in the Book of Esther in college, the book in which the story of Purim is told. I've always loved the gumption of Esther!

The National Children's Museum has been celebrating holidays around the world and this weekend's celebration is Purim. It sounds like a wonderful celebration and a great way for your child to learn more about their own religion or to explore another one.

Children are encouraged to come dressed as kings or queens, you know your little princesses out there will love that! The story of Purim will be read at 11:30am (Saturday only), 1pm and 2pm (both days). Children can make noise makers and enjoy other activities. In honor of the Jewish tradition of mishloach manot, or sending portions, all are encouraged to bring a canned good to donate to the Capitol Area Food Bank.

It's impolite to ask what birthday, but I'll tell you that the National Wildlife Refuge has now been around for 108 years! Here are some fun facts:

*The system now inclues more than 150 milion acres, 553 national wildlife refuges (and other units) and 38 wetland management districts.

Advent Activity Calendar

Inspired by Amy at Teach Mama and Jordan at Oh Happy Day, I've put together an Advent Activity Calendar for our family this year. Each day, December 1 through December 25, when Lucas opens that day's drawer on our first-ever advent calendar he'll find a fun activity for that day.

Several of the activities are things we already planned to do or attend: the town Christmas Tree lighting, a visit with Santa, his nursery school's Christmas program and our parents' group holiday party. Other things are easy and fun things we would have done anyway: shop for our giving tree gifts, dance to holiday music, make paper snowflakes, write a letter to Santa, watch a Christmas movie, deliver treats to friends, bake cookies.

A few things are easy but will blow his mind: camp out on the living room floor under the Christmas Tree, drink hot cocoa with marshmallows for breakfast.

And, several more are local holiday activities which I'll be writing about over the next few days.

{So sorry for my very long absence. I undertook a big venture over the past eight or so months that didn't leave much time for blogging. But, I'm now back, hopefully regularly.}

Sleepover at the Smithsonian

Way back when I was a Girl Scout, our troop joined other troops from central Pennsylvania to sleep at one of those hands-on type museums in Harrisburg, PA. I have no idea if the museum still exists or what it was called, but to this day, I vividly remember spending the night there. It was seriously one of the coolest experiences ever.

But you know what would be WAY more cool? Spending the night at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History!

I don't usually write about the things that PR reps send to me, but, my friends, even though Lucas is too young to join in on this adventure, it has crossed my mind to do it myself!

That's right, the Smithsonian is offering a limited number of spots for a limited number of sleepover nights at the National History Museum in July and August. According to the website, you get to screen an IMAX film, join a scavenger hunt, have a guided tour then sleep in the Sant Ocean Hall, Mammal Hall or Hall of Dinosaurs.

So, it is a bit pricey, $125 general admission or $115 if you are a resident member and you have to be 8-12 years old (chaperons must be 21 or older). But, if you can swing it, I am sure this would be a true once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Juneteenth Celebration

On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after Lincoln proclaimed the freedom of all slaves in the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers finally brought the news to Galvestan, TX that the war was over and all the slaves were freed. Until that point, there were not enough Union soldiers in Texas to enforce the new law, but the additional troops under the leadership of Major General Gordan Granger were finally able to enforce freedom for every slave. (Read more here.)

Now, Juneteenth is a day for all people to come together to acknowledge a truly horrid period of US history and to focus on education and achievement.

Come celebrate this Saturday, June 19, at Watkins Regional Park from noon until 5pm. This free Juneteenth celebration features live entertainment throughout the day (Jazz, Blues, Gospel and lots of dancing!), guest speakers, arts and craft and--of course!--great food. (I imagine there are nominal costs for the food and arts and crafts.) You can attend a "Footprints and Roots" genealogical and historical workshop or bring your chessboard and meet and learn from Chess Instructor/Coach Ted Fagan of the Eagle Chess Academy.

Don't forget your picnic blanket or lawn chairs!

Cheverly Community Market: Now Featuring a Kids Corner

You'll want to be sure to get out by ten this Saturday for this season's 2nd Cheverly Community Market!* That's because the Cheverly Parent Resource Center will kick off their Market Kids Corner this Saturday at 10am!

At every market this season, CPRC will sponsor a storytelling or craft event featuring one or two of the market vendors. For this Saturday's kick-off, a volunteer will read The Giant Jam Sandwich by John Vernon Lord and all the kids in attendance will receive a coupon for 50 cents off a jar of deliciousness (aka Martha's Jam!). In addition, all kids who sign up for the Kids Corner will receive a card, each time they participate they will receive a sticker and--as if stickers aren't prize enough!--when they get five stickers they will receive a small prize from a vendor.

Have you ever driven by the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center on your way to Ikea and wondered what goes on there? Well, this Saturday is your chance to find out!

It is their 100th Anniversary and they are celebrating with fun for the whole family including hay rides; animal, farm machinery and research exhibits; and, hands on demonstrations. Best part? It's all free! (But, as usual at things like this, light refreshments will be for sale.) We haven't been to this in the past, but a quick perusal of their photo gallery of past field days make it look like it will be a really great event!

Cheverly Day (aka The Most Wonderful Day of the Year!)

Cheverly Day is fast-approaching on Saturday, May 22, and if you live in town, or in the local area, it is a must-attend family-friendly event! The festivities kick off with the Cheverly Day Dance (aka the Cheverly Prom) on Friday evening. I won't be writing more about that because: first, it is sold out; and second, it is an un-family friendly event because no kids are allowed. (Don't fear, though, Cheverly Day features lots of family-friendly music and dance opportunities!)

All activities take place in and around the Cheverly Town Hall and Cheverly Town Park, located at 6401 Forest Road, Cheverly, MD.

Saturday kicks off with the Cicada Crunch and continues with the infamous East v. West Softball Game at 11am (arrive early to warm-up; the organizers plan to start promptly this year, breaking all past Cheverly Day traditions!)

By 11:30 you can indulge in fantastic food and at noon it's time to start drinking the St. Ambrose Men's Club Beer Garden!

Information tables hosted by local groups, organizations--and, I venture to guess, numerous political candidates--will be open from 1pm-6pm. For the second year in a row, the Cheverly Parent Resource Center will host a "Tots Corner" during this time as well. This is a welcome space just for younger children who may be a bit overwhelmed by the action of the midway.

Speaking of...at 1pm head over to the tennis courts which will be transformed into a carnival midway for lots of fun games for the kids. Buy your Cheverly Day t-shirt there early. It's extra-cute this year and is expected to sell out. Games close down at 5pm.

Between 2 and 4pm you and your kids can get up close to some raptors (birds of prey) demonstrated by Watkins Park staff members.

At 6pm, head over to the Community Center Gym for a new-this-year Family Dance Party with DJ Iana.

Yes, enjoying all that is Cheverly Day is is a marathon, not a sprint. (Unless, that is, you hope to claim first place in the Cicada Crunch!).

Cheverly Day Cicada Crunch: Register today!

Do you remember 2004? The year of the 17-year cicadas? Remember how they landed on your head and crunched under your feet?

That was the same summer the Cheverly Day 5K run was born and the runners dubbed the event the "Cicada Crunch" -- a name that has stuck!

Since then, runners from all over the region have come to Cheverly to take part in the annual event. The infamous hills of Cheverly make it especially challenging--and oh-so-rewarding! Another reward is knowing that your registration fee benefits a wonderful local organization, the Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek, which helps to protect an important tributary to the Anacostia River.

The 2010 Cicada Crunch will take place on Saturday, May 22 at 10am. Registration is only $25 for the 5K ($5 off for Prince George's Running Club members) and only $10 for the 2K walk. Kids 12 and under doing the 2K walk are free!

13th Annual Cheverly Truck Touch: Saturday, May 1

If you have a kid who knew the difference between a dump truck and a digger by age 2 or if you've ever slowed down or sped up to get in the lane next to a garbage truck for your child's enjoyment, this Saturday, May 1, THE place to be is at the 13th Annual Cheverly Truck Touch!

This annual fundraiser for Cheverly's Weekday Nursery and Mother's Day Out programs will feature over 20 vehicles for your kid to explore--they can climb aboard, sit in the driver's seat and honk the horn in vehicles including firetrucks, an ambulance, a garbage truck, a dump truck and a back hoe. There will be classic cars and a race car, delivery trucks, an oil truck, a school bus and an RV. And, this year, the Maryland National Guard is sending over a state-of-the-art HUMVEE!

In addition to exploring the trucks, there will be games, face-painting and balloons. Volunteer parents will be grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for sale for lunch.

Admission is only $5 per child (which includes 4 game tickets) and parents are free! The festivities will last from 10am until 2pm.

Visit the NASA Goddard Visitor's Center in Honor of WhyMommy

This post was originally published in September 2009. I am re-posting it today in honor of Team WhyMommy's Virtual Science Fair. Susan Nieber, aka WhyMommy, is a mom and an astrophysicist who has been fighting inflammatory breast cancer and educating others about it since 2007. Today she is undergoing surgery to remove a local regional recurrence of cancer in the lymph nodes under her arm pit. I hope that Susan, this post, and the dozens more at the Virtual Science Fair, inspire you to get out and do something science-related with your kids today!

Lucas and I recently spent a fun morning at the NASA Goddard Visitor Center. He had a blast donning a space suite and stepping inside a Mercury capsule model to flip all the switches and begin the launch countdown.

The Visitor Center is easy to get to and is--what else would you expect from NASA?--simply packed with amazing photographs of outer space and all kinds of incredible information. While Lucas was busy playing with the model spaceships or putting together a puzzle of the solar system, I was reading as much as I could, just trying to take it all in.

After I finally dragged Lucas away from the Mercury capsule, kids area and beautiful images inside the visitor center, he was in awe of the Goddard Rocket Garden out back. It was so fun to get up close and even touch (the signs said no climbing but didn't mention touching so I took them literally, as any good scientist would!) rockets some of which had actually been to space and back. Lucas kept asking if they were going to blast off (with a mix of excitement and trepidation in his voice!) and so I think it would be great fun to bring him back for one of the Sunday model rocket launches (details below).

Overall, this was another great destination in Prince George's County: we're so lucky to have a part of NASA right in our backyard. As with many of these smaller museums/visitors centers outside of the Smithsonian, we practically had the place to ourselves. There was plenty of room and Lucas didn't have to share the kid-friendly exhibits/activities with anyone else.

I also loved the fact that the gift shop was in an entirely different building, a building that we successfully avoided making the visit truly cost free!

Bowie Baysox Free Family FunFest this Saturday, March 27

This Saturday, March 27 from 10am until 2pm, the Bowie Baysox (the AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) will host their annual Family FunFest. It's a day of free fun for the entire family!

Highlights include: inflatables, interactive games, a scavenger hunt, live music, face painting and a chance to run the bases (weather permitting). In addition, the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department and Bowie Police will be there with a firetruck and activities.

Yesterday I bought Lucas and Nathaniel matching outfits for Easter--plaid button up shirts with navy sweater vests and tan pants. Abel had a few hours free during the day so he was with me at the store. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Pachyderm Parade

The circus is coming to town! Did you ever stop to think about how they get those big animals from the trains to the venue? They walk them right through town!

Last year I took Lucas into DC to watch the elephant parade. It was a very fun, free way to enjoy the elephants (and clowns and a few other animals) in a unique way. Unfortunately, in an attempt to avoid the crowd that had gathered on one side of the street, we got the back end of their little show.

That big one on the right did give us just the kind of show a 3 year old boy would love. Ahem.

You can catch the Pachyderm Parade this Tuesday, March 16. The parade is tentatively scheduled to begin at 1pm.

The walk will start at Virginia Avenue, SE then will head Northwest on Washington Avenue, SW. It will then head West on Independence Avenue, SW, past the Congressional Office Buildings and the Capitol. They'll turn North on 3rd Street, SW and continue on 3rd Street NW before heading West on G Street, NW. Finally, they will go North on 6th Street, NW and into the loading dock at the Verizon Center.

Tips:

Organizers are encouraging press to be at 3rd Street between Jefferson Drive, SW and Madison Drive, NW at approximately 1:20pm. That's the West front of the Capitol Building. My guess is that this is where you'll want to be as well, to catch a little show. The Federal Center SW Metro stop is the closest stop to this location.

Let your kids bounce out their energy at Pump it Up

Oh my, spring is just SO close we can almost taste it! We're so ready to be outside every day exploring our local playgrounds and parks. But, until the warm weather really arrives, we are still in need of some indoor locations to help burn off some energy. Pump it Up is a great place to do that!

I took Lucas to the local Pump it Up about a year ago and yesterday afternoon he was there again for a birthday party. Not only did he have a blast, even the sugar high from the birthday cupcake didn't stop him from falling right to sleep last night and even sleeping in a bit this morning!

Pump it Up is basically two huge rooms filled with inflatables--moon bounces, obstacle courses and amazing slides--for kids to jump, bounce and climb to their heart's content. Parents are welcome to get in the game, too! It's a great work out (trust me!). Other than hosting or being invited to a party at Pump It Up, families have three opportunities to visit each week.

Mt. Rainier Nature/Recreation Center

I have to admit, with a new baby in the house and all the recent snow, this Smiling Mama hasn't been getting "out by ten" very often! But last weekend we were all ready to get out to explore something new. I thought the Mt. Rainier Nature/Recreation Center would be a good place to check out: it's close to home and looked like it would be pretty low key. Both turned out to be true.

The Mt. Rainier Nature/Recreation Center is a very small center located near historic Mt. Rainier. It is perfect for pre-schoolers or young elementary-aged children. I'd be willing to put money down on the bet that on any given day your family will be the only visitors. That ended up being a nice bonus for us since we had 6 week old Nathaniel with us--he was fast asleep in his car seat so we could set him down while we explored and simply move him from room to room with us: there are only three rooms so he wasn't moved often!

Lucas enjoyed looking at snakes, salamanders, turtles (the alligator turtle was a big hit!) and frogs. We all had fun watching the rabbit eat and the adults got a big kick out of the poem and lesson on scat (aka poop!). There is a great book corner with lots of books for your kids to look at and for you to read to them. There are also lessons about Native Americans, recycling and insects.

And, to fulfill the "recreation" designation: there's an air hockey table and Foosball table. Just ask the front desk for the balls/pucks and, with an adult present, they'll hand them over. We enjoyed several spirited games!

If you are looking for an interesting, but low-key, free activity for about an hour (possibly 2 hours depending on your child's interest in spending time with the books or doing each activity), then the Mt. Rainier Nature/Recreation Center is a great place to visit.

Later this spring, they'll be offering a pre-school nature club, puppet shows and campfires: come back to Out by Ten on March 1 for the dates and details. We also spied two fun-looking playgrounds nearby. After the snow melts (and mud dries up!) they would be fun to visit in conjunction with the Nature Center.

Can you believe school is closed in Prince George's County again Tuesday? I just did a little counting and from February 3 through February 16 school has been open only 1.5 out of 14 days! No wonder kids and parents alike are freaking out about another day at home!

Winter Wonderland or Kill Storm 2010? Has Snowpocalypse 2010 been a dream come true or a nightmare for your and your family? Either way, I'm sure you've already used up every creative idea you've ever had for keeping the kiddos entertained, both indoors and out, over the past six days of snow. With most schools closed in the region through at least Monday (oh, yeah, more snow is forecasted for Monday--eek!), we are all looking for new ideas. Out by Ten to the rescue! Man do I love Amy over at Teach Mama. She's my inspiration for attempting new fun and educational activities with Lucas. I'll admit that I only get around to doing about one percent of the things Amy blogs about at Teach Mama, but even that small bit makes me feel like a rock star mama!

Of course she's one step and a few days ahead of me in helping you stave off cabin fever. That's right, she's already posted a round up of some classic Teach Mama indoor activities--most of which can be organized very easily and use things you have laying around the house. If you just do one or two of these, I guarantee you'll feel like a rock star mama, too!

Birthday Party at the Watkins Nature Center

Hosting a fun kid's birthday party during the winter can be challenging, especially when you live in a smallish house. Lucas's birthday is just a few days before Christmas and with the birth of Nathaniel we have an early January birthday as well so I have years of doing some creative-thinking for birthday parties ahead of me!

Back in October, I wrote about several indoor birthday party venues in Prince George's County. Based on that research I decided to host Lucas's fourth birthday party at the Watkins Nature Center at Watkins Park. It was a fantastic success and the venue exceeded my high expectations.

Here are the details.

The birthday party rental fee is $100 for residents of Prince George's or Montgomery counties. You get exclusive use of the party room which includes tables, chairs, a sink and refrigerator for a total of 3 hours (that timeline must include set-up and clean-up). You and your guests can also enjoy non-exclusive use of the nature center itself (though on our party day no other visitors came and we did have it all to ourselves!). One of the best parts, though, is that one of the staff naturists leads a 30 minute "Wild Things Animal Show" in the classroom for you and your guests. They also provide Watkins Nature Center coloring books for each of your guests (which we used as the basis of our favor). You also get 15% off in their gift shop on the day you make your payment or your party day if you want to purchase additional favors for your guests (or gifts for the birthday child!). You can have up to 25 children and up to 50 people total--by far the largest number allowed at any of the locations I researched. All the details can be found here (scroll down to the bottom).

This is how we set-up and decorate the room. You can read more of the

The naturist did a great job with our Wild Animal Show--she really kept
the children's attention and 30 minutes was just long enough.

Lucas loved touching the snake--he still talks about the "proper" way to pet a snake!

If you are looking for a great, indoor birthday party location, we'd definitely recommend the Watkins Nature Center! And, even if you're not looking for a party venue, don't forget that the Nature Center has awesome weekday and weekend educational programming for kids all year long!

Tomorrow, Saturday, January 23 is LEGO Aircraft Building Day at the College Park Aviation Museum. Our favorite local museum, by far, the College Park Aviation Museum offers something for everyone. And if your kids (or you!) love LEGOs then you just have to stop by tomorrow between 11am and 4pm.

The museum provides all the bricks to fuel your imagination and to build your best aircraft-inspired creation. They'll take a photo of your creation so you can remember it forever and if yours is one of the best, it will be put on display for all to admire!

ICE! At Gaylord National Resort at National Harbor

Have you been to ICE! at National Harbor yet? I'll admit that we haven't gotten there but it is still on my must-do list this holiday season. And, lucky for all of us who are, um, slightly behind in our holiday preparations, it is open until January 10!

I really can't wrap my brain around what this attraction must be like in real life. I mean, 15,000 square feet, 2 million pounds of ice and 1,400 specially designed LED tube lights: it must be incredible! And, it's right here in Prince George's County!

ICE! has gotten rave reviews from the Washington Post, but even more trust-worthy, in my opinion, is the rave review it got from Jessica over at A Parent in Silver Spring (read about her family's visit here.)

Watkins Regional Park Festival of Lights

Last week I raved about the National Zoo's ZooLights in conjunction with my giveaway of a family pack of tickets. But, did you know there's another amazing light show right here in Prince George's County?

This is the 23rd year for the Watkins Regional Park Festival of Lights! A very nice aspect of this wonderful display is that it is a drive through event. You and your family can enjoy it in the rain or snow or freezing temps from the cozy comfort of your own vehicle. (And, if you're like me, with Christmas music blasting!) As you slowly drive through the park, you drive under light displays and will have a lot of fun spotting them on all sides of the road. This year's display features more than one million twinkling lights as well as new displays like Santa flying a helicopter and driving a fire truck.

Kids' Night at Chick-fil-A

Last week we stumbled upon Kids' Night at the Chick-fil-A at Vista Gardens Marketplace. What fun! If you, like me, have a practically empty fridge from being away for Thanksgiving weekend or if you were the one hosting and cooking all weekend then you might just want to head over to Chick-fil-A tonight.

Here's the scoop. Every Tuesday night from 5-8pm the Chick-fil-A at Vista Gardens Marketplace offers a free 4 piece kid's nugget meal with the purchase of any combo or a dinner and medium drink. Okay, so a free kid's meal is great, right? But, nothing too special. The best part, in my opinion, is that they also have someone there doing face painting or balloon animals (I believe this rotates each week) for the kids for FREE! I know nothing excites Lucas more than a balloon animal (or hat!).

The fine print is that the child, age 12 or under, must be present and you get the free meal in the dining room only (not via the drive-thru). No coupon is necessary.

This Chick-fil-A is already one of our favorite lunch destinations because of the fun indoor play area but now we have another reason to head over on the occasional Tuesday evening.

Wee Wonders at the National Children's Museum -- December Events

The Wee Wonders program at the National Children's Museum (NCM) Launch Zone continues in December!

You can practically create your own preschool for your toddler with the help of the National Children's Museum and their Wee Wonders program. Each month, the NCM is offering programs on a different theme for children ages 2-3. According to the NCM, "these fun, fast-paced learning events typically include stories, games, art, music, experiments, drama, and movement around a different theme."

Please note: each month the same program is offered multiple times. But knowing how much my own son loved repetition as a toddler, you may want to visit more than once a month!

(I'm a total sucker for anyone and everything that uses the name Aimee spelled just like me!) But, seriously, I love reading with Lucas and love discovering new books so immediately said Yes!

Pretty Please Press was founded in 2001 and publishes children's books that are designed to be read aloud and talked about. Each book contains a message about character and values that helps parents and children think and talk about a variety of issues. In addition, the website offers parents and teachers additional free resources like vocabulary guides, reading comprehension materials and lesson plans for each book.

Each of the four books above is lovely and thought-provoking. The one Lucas and I have come back to several times since receiving our copies is Kick Block Punch. Lucas is already a pretty rough and tumble kid. Add to that his recent obsession with the movie Kung Fu Panda and we've got a budding martial artist on our hands. There are many areas for discussion within Kick Block Punch but I've been able to use it to discuss the fact that real martial artists don't pick fights or practice on their friends or siblings. In fact, in real life they'd run away from a fight or a stranger.

National American Indian Festival: Saturday, November 14

Are you or your children interested in American Indian heritage? Then you're in luck! November is National American Indian Heritage Month and a great FREE event is taking place right here in Prince George's County this Saturday, November 14.

The National American Indian Festival will take place this Saturday from 10am until 3pm at the Patuxent River 4-H Center in Upper Marlboro. Come on out to the festival to learn all about the culture and history of the people of the First Nations.

Very respected elder Clayton Old Elk will emcee a program featuring live music from Ron Warren and Janice Torres. Never heard of them? Me either, but apparently they are pretty renound Native American musicians performing on the flute and vocals/percussion, respectively.

You can also try some archery and canoeing (try not to fall in, I bet the water is pretty cold these days!). There will be artifacts, exhibits and demonstrations. You can make crafts, play games and listen to stories. And, of course, you can eat! Yummy food including including Indian tacos, fry bread and more will be available.

Did I mention it's all free? (Well, probably not the food, but that's to be expected.)

Birthday Party Ideas

Lucas's birthday is just a few days before Christmas and so the poor guy is doomed to have his birthday coincide with frantic Christmas preparations, holiday travel and, most years, no in-school cupcakes on his actual birthday. Thus far in his short little life, we've never even been home for his birthday! His birthday celebrations have been lovely affairs but also have been very low-key with guest lists comprised of grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles.

This year one of the items on my "To Do Before Baby" list is "throw Lucas a real birthday party with his friends." The only problems are that by the time his birthday rolls around, I'll be a solid 8 months pregnant, it will be very cold outside, and our not-very-large house will (hopefully!) already be decorated for Christmas. (Christmas tree + lots of preschoolers = trouble.) All these factors combined with the fact that his grandmothers completely funded birthdays #1, #2 and #3 have led me to want to splurge for birthday #4. We're going to throw Lucas's party at a fun location in Prince George's County!

Here are some local out-of-the-house birthday party options I've discovered in my research. After the big par-tay I'll let you know which one we chose and how it went.

College Park Aviation Museum
I've already professed my love of the College Park Aviation Museum. Hopefully you've taken my advice to visit. But, did you know they offer birthday party packages as well? Packages include access to the museum and party room, aviation carnival games, gift bags, a t-shirt for the birthday boy or girl and a craft. Click here for all the details.

Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex
You know how much I love the open gymnastics at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex but they have so much more to offer, including a leisure pool. You can host a birthday party there for kids ages 3-12. Features include a one-hour open swim and additional hour in the party room. They provide invitations, tablecloths, plates, cups, silverware and napkins. However, based on their website information, it appears that you can not supply your own homemade food. Food must be prepared by a "licensed food service manager." Click here for all the details.

Pump It Up!

Lucas and I had a blast at the Lanham-Bowie location's Pump it Up Pop In Playtime last winter and I imagine this would be a really fun place to have a birthday party. They have several birthday party packages with weekday parties being cheaper than weekend parties. All packages include plenty of time with the inflatables and the use of a private party room. Additional amenities include free full color invitations, complimentary paper products, party set up and clean-up. Click here to see the package options.

Watkins Park Nature Center
Watkins Park would be our top pick for a summer birthday party. We'd have a picnic and then take the kids on a carousel and miniature train ride. But, those just aren't options during the winter. Luckily, the indoor Watkins Park Nature Center offers a great winter (and year round!) destination for a birthday party. Their "Wild Things" birthday package includes a 30-minute animal show, private use of the workshop room for the party and a coloring book for each guest. Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex Gymnastics Workshops

Lucas and I went to an Open Gymnastics Workshop at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex for the first time in March 2008. That afternoon, I wrote a post titled $6 = 3 hour nap = Priceless. Seriously, that $6 and the many more $6 I've spent on subsequent visits have been some of the best money I've ever spent on Lucas.

The Gymnastics Center at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex is truly a first-class facility. They have a complete set of competition-grade men's and women's gymnastics equipment as well as wonderful tot-sized equipment and fun extra things like a rope swing.

Each week, the Sports and Learning Complex offers open gymnastics workshops for children ages walking to 12 years old. This is unstructured, free time for your kids to basically run around and go crazy! Some of the professional equipment (full-size uneven bars, horse, etc.) are off-limits but there is still so much to do! Kids can jump on the trampolines, walk on the balance beams, run and jump on the practice mats, swing on the rope swing into the foam pit, etc. Trust me, they--and you!--will burn off a ton of energy in one hour of open gymnastics.

Two cautions: First, it is really up to you to keep your child safe. There are 1-2 employees on duty during open gymnastics but they seem to only enforce rules occasionally. Be ready to move quickly to keep up with younger children. Second, jump into the foam pit at your own risk! You'll see your child and others quickly climb out of the pit. For you, it will be another story: think quicksand!

Now through December 19, Open Gymnastics Workshops will take place:

Tuesdays from 11:30am-12:30pm (no workshop on Nov. 24)
Wednesdays from 11:30am-12:30pm (no workshop on Nov. 11 or Nov. 25)
Fridays from 4:30-5:30pm (no workshop on Nov. 27)
Saturdays from 1:30-2:30 pm (no workshop on Oct. 31, Nov. 7 or Nov. 28)

Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a limit of 30 kids total and a maximum of 3 children per adult. Parents are required to be on the floor with their children. Fee: $6 per child.

Wee Wonders at the National Children's Museum -- November Events

The Wee Wonders program at the National Children's Museum (NCM) Launch Zone continues in November!

You can practically create your own preschool for your toddler with the help of the National Children's Museum and their Wee Wonders program. Each month, the NCM is offering programs on a different theme for children ages 2-3. According to the NCM, "these fun, fast-paced learning events typically include stories, games, art, music, experiments, drama, and movement around a different theme."

Please note: each month the same program is offered multiple times. But knowing how much my own son loved repetition as a toddler, you may want to visit more than once a month!

Wee Wonders' Fall at the Farm

It's harvest time at the pretend NCM farm! Little farmers will tend to pretend animals and crops and celebrate nature's autumn surprises. Explore apples, pumpkins, and farm animals.

The parade begins (never promptly!) at 3:45 and proceeds down Park Way then up Forest Road to the Town Hall for some fun activities from 4:00-6:00pm. This year the Recreation Council will be serving dinner so the kids aren't trick or treating on an empty stomach.

This annual event is enjoyed by kids of all ages but is a must for kids who are too young to go out trick-or-treating later in the evening. Personally, I think it would be a blast if town residents lined the parade route to cheer on the Cheverly ghosts and goblins (or, more likely, the Cheverly princesses, animals, fire fighters and Thomas the Trains)!

Watkins Nature Center

I've written before about our love of Watkins Park. Now, however, the carousel and miniature train are closed for the season and it is getting a bit too chilly to hang out at the playground or enjoy a picnic. But that doesn't mean that Watkins Park doesn't have great activities to offer you and your family! In fact, the Watkins Nature Center might just be the perfect place to visit if you're looking for a fun and easy indoor activity!

Lucas and I visited the Nature Center last week and he had a blast looking at the snakes, turtles, reptiles and owls. He even put on a little puppet show for me. Outside you can see several large birds of prey and look for frogs in the ponds. Visiting the Nature Center during regular hours is free!

Learn the Thriller Dance and Be Part of "Thrill the World 2009"

Have you heard about Thrill the World? It's an annual worldwide simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson's “Thriller.” This year, of course, it's an extra-special tribute to Michael Jackson and organizers have a goal of 270,000 participants worldwide in order to break the current Guinness World Record for Largest Simultaneous Dance.

Some local organizations are getting in on the fun to teach you and your family the dance.

Dance lessons in Cheverly:

October 9, 16 and 23
7-8pm for children ages 5-14
8-9pm for anyone over 14
Cheverly United Methodist Church, 3rd Floor
$30 per person, or $50 for families

Can't get to a rehearsal? Download the dance moves and practice at home!

After you master the moves, you and your zombies can join others in the DC-area for the official, local dance event at Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC on Saturday, October 24. There will be a final rehearsal at Freedom Plaza that morning at 11:30am. Registration begins at 4pm. The event is free but donations to the Paralyzed Veterans of America Spinal Research Foundation are encouraged. The official performance will take place at 8:30pm.

Local Fire Stations Celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with Open Houses

The lovely and amazing Jessica McFadden of A Parent in Silver Spring had an article in the Washington Post this weekend about open houses at fire stations around the area. Jessica writes, "The activities vary from station to station. Handouts such as plastic fireman hats, hot dogs and popcorn, hugs from such costumed characters as Sparky the Fire Dog or Terry the Traumasaurus and a jump in a moon bounce are all common features at the open houses."

According to the article, here are the upcoming open houses at Prince George's County fire stations:

But National Fire Prevention Week isn't just about letting your kids see a firetruck up close or getting to spray a fire hose: Don't forget to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and talk with your kids about what your family would do if there was a fire. Here are some good resources.
